VOR SONNENAUFGANG
by Ewald Palmetshofer after Gerhart Hauptmann

German original text and English translation. Danish and Norwegian translations by Thomas Bjørnager

A new version of the Nobel laureate, Gerhart Hauptmann’s scandalous family drama from 1889 here transferred to the 21st century. Helene returns home to assist her sister, Martha, who is pregnant with the heir to the family business. Here, Helene falls in love with the leftist intellectual journalist, Alfred, who has turned up to confront his old friend from university, Thomas, who has risen up the social ladder and has become a right-wing populist provincial politician and businessman. From this scenario, Ewald Palmetshofer (playwright of the year 2020 in Theater Heute) has written a pertinent, painful and linguistically rich tragedy set in a modern polarized society. Staged at several theaters in the German-speaking countries.
