3 F / 4 m drama One of the most central plays of one of the most distinguished theatrical poets of our time. This prison play –from the fascistic Spain of Franco – is a surreal piece of ritual theatre. It’s a theatre poem – it is not literature. It is violent and raw but is also expressed with poetic terms, leaving your mind floating. 23 years in a cell – it’s more humane just to cut off your hand like they did in the dark Middle Ages says one of them. Torture and execution – we see it happen with an overflow of blood, just like Pilatus did. Finally, the rise occurs when the naked actors shed some light on the apotheosis of hope. It is raw and heavenly poetic with the stage amongst the audience who is taken into the darkness by the actors; the prisoners in a cage in the middle of the hall. The dreams blow out of the cage – the experience of the audience will blow out the walls and add new dimensions.
