John Steinbeck’s masterpiece from 1939 tells the story of the underclass in USA during Dirty Thirties: Tom Joad is paroled from prison for homicide. Returning to the family farm he finds the Joads has been evicted. They see no other option but to travel west to California, where there should be labour and good salaries to find, supposedly. Tom joins them, even though leaving the state violates his parole, unaware of the sacrifices the entire Joad family will be in for.
