The main character in this play is Disson, he is a great manufacturer of toilets and bidets. Additionally, he is fully aware of being somewhat of a weirdo and is due to marry Diana for the second time. She is an upper class lady who is to help him gain respectability and social status. The narrative spans over a year and culminates with a tea party when celebrating their one-year anniversary. At this point, Disson is having problems with his eyesight, which is a reoccurring Pinter element. So during a game of ping-pong with Diana’s brother, who may also be her lover, he suddenly sees two balls rather than one and therefore is pictured as being mad. Lastly, when he blinds himself in an oedipal fashion, he nearly becomes a tragic hero despite the play being a comedy.
