1 F / 2 M This is the first of Pinter’s plays that concerns the middle class and furthermore it does not take place in one room only. The play revolves around an elderly couple, Edward and Flora, who are chatting about the weather over breakfast. A rather tense atmosphere surrounds them and similar to other of Pinter’s plays, one senses a threat from the outside. Here it takes shape in form of the old shabby man, who unsuccessfully has been selling matches for a couple of months, at the end of their garden. Edward who has been complaining about a slight eye ache, eventually overcomes his snobbism and invites the match vendor indoor, he is even invited to sit in Edwards chair. So while Edward slowly weakens, the match vendor somehow gains strength and additionally arouses Flora sexually. Hence, towards the end the two men have changed places.
