In his dramatization of Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel;”The three musketeers”, Schmitt has found a different approach to the story. The beautiful, unpredictable and seducing female villain, Milady de Winter, is the center of the play’s attention. The play is equally a comedic fairytale and a tragedy presenting all the classical elements from the costume drama. The plot is driven by Milady and the intrigues around her motivated by her dark side. She is an ambiguous person, executioner and victim at the same time – victim of her family, her time and the men she has to serve in order to gain her independency as a woman.
The play is a fantastic dramatic shot at trying to understand a woman without moralizing her. The play premiered in 2010 at L’Abbaye de Villers-la-Ville in Belgium.
