The story of a young girl trapped in an increasingly tiny world.
In the beginning was the mattress. Gradually, other little changes – more bolts on the front door; the gun; the locked cupboard. And she knew in her heart that change was bad.
Based on a true story, Lela & Co. premiered at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in September 2015.
(From an online-review):
‘Damn, this is dark. Told in a monologue style, we’re introduced to Lela, who guides us through the story, and a variety of men who had a huge impact on her life. Some in obvious ways as soon as they happen, others in smaller ways that only become significant many years later.
It is a play that is not for the faint hearted and all the more powerful for it. The structure is beautifully done whilst the stories told are subtle in the character they convey.’
