After 15 years of loyal service, Henri Boulanger is fired from his job and now he wants to die. However, all his suicide attempts fail – partly because of a gas-strike and partly because he is impractical. Finally, in a grubby bar, he hires a contract killer to kill him at an indefinite time. Shortly after, he falls in love with the florist Margaret. She makes him realise that there is a meaning of life after all. When he returns to the bar to cancel the contract he discovers that it has been torn down – and the contract killer is no longer reachable.
