Max lives in an old, scruffy house in North London together with his two sons, Lenny and Joey as well as his brother Sam. Max is 70 years old and a retired butcher, Sam is a driver for a car leasing company, Joey hopes to become a professional boxer even though he is slow and rather thick; undoubtedly the complete opposite to the quick and mischievous Lenny whose profession is somewhat unclear. The sons’ Mother is dead and it is hinted that she was a prostitute and so their attitude towards her and her memory is ambivalent.
Then from the outside world arrives the oldest son together with his wife Ruth. They are en route from Italy back home to America where Teddy is a university teacher in philosophy. From Ruth’s confrontation with the various men of the family, except Teddy, it is revealed that they are all either former, present or future pimps; meat dealers. Eventually, Teddy travels alone to America to reunite with their children and his job, which leaves Ruth back in London, enjoying her power over the men.
