A full-length musical in 2 acts
15 sets
The play takes place at the turn of the century and the main character is Dolly Gallagher Levy, a well-known marriage intermediary in New York. She has taken it upon her to find a suitable wife for the rich merchant Mr Yonkers Horace Vandergelder and the widowed tailoress of women’s clothes Mrs Molly is the obvious candidate. The only problem with that match however, is that Dolly has fallen for Mr Vandergelder herself. So, as part of her mission, she arranges a dinner at the Harmonia Gardens restaurant for Mr Vandergelder’s two clerks, Barnaby Tucker and Cornelius Hackl as well as Mrs Molly and her assistant Minnie Fay. Concurrently, she has planned for Mr Vandergelder to dine with the dancer Miss Ernestina Money at the same venue; well aware of the fact that compared with Ernestina’s vulgar appearance Dolly will stand out in outmost elegance. And so after a series of confusing events Mr Vandergelder realises that is with Dolly he is to find true love.
