This is one of the greatest Off Broadway successes in recent time. Similar to ‘The Rocky Horror’, ‘Hedwig’ is the victor in its rock musical field. The show is centred on a concert with Hedwig, originally Hansel Schmidt who grew up in East Berlin as a lonely ‘girl-boy’. In between the rock songs during the ‘concert’, Hedwig explains how he/she underwent a rather unsuccessful sex change in order to marry an American soldier and move to America, the land of freedom. However, they divorce and she ends up in Kansas where she makes ends meet by prostitution. Later on she becomes a mentor, songwriter, collaborator and mistress to a teenage boy called Tommy Gnosis. Tommy becomes a great celebrity, forsakes Hedwig who then is left to perform her show in dingy nightclubs while searching for recognition and identity. The songs in the show vary from punk and glam-rock to great ballads.
