Hamlet, a pomaded and elegantly dressed man in his mid-thirties is sole inheritor to the family business after the poisoning of his mother and stepfather. Being a magnate, he remains an incompetent dreamer who reads comics during the board meetings and has no deep interest in the production of rubber ducks. As he attempts to avenge his father, a journey towards the abyss commences. Kaurismäki’s version of Shakespeare is a pitiless criticism of capitalism. With the stories eminently combined in the dramaturgy of gangster films and with a convincing use of ironic refractions and a unique dark lunacy, this becomes a condensed and gruesome comedy about the evil of the world. The film was in cinemas in 1986 and received excellent reviews: “Kaurismaki does Hamlet – but with a lot less words; a modern
setting; plenty of dry humour; and, of course, a score that includes both Tchaikovsky’s 6th and rock `n’ Roll […] pretty damn good. Kaurismaki rules. OK?” – BBC
