The MP, Charlie Hammett, is emblematic of the Labour Party of the 1960s. He has created his own self-enclosed society by refusing to visit his constituency. The isolation appears as an outgrowth of the middle-class environment. His wealthy wife, Maud, works in the show business and is a casting director for a production of King Lear. She often makes references to acting and its relation to reality. The play is divided into two acts which are titled ”Public Life” and ”Private Life” to show that these exhibitionistic characters are no different in their public and private personas.
