This is one of the 1970's greatest musical hits, following 'Hair' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. It is based on the Gospel of Matthew, which concerns the last days in the life of Jesus Christ. In this version the parables have been made contemporary and are told by actors dressed in clowns' costumes. The main themes benevolence, forgiveness and tolerance are accompanied by excellent music that is inspired by rock, gospel and ragtime. The show is full of hits such as ‘Day By Day’ and ‘Prepare ye the way of the Lord’. It is evident that the musical was written in the days when children of the flower children were still part of life but nevertheless the music is fantastic and the topics more current than perhaps ever. Also, the show offers a variety of ways to stage the relatively few actors. ‘Godspell’ is a show not based on a specific plot but rather a general matter, accompanied by fantastic and ear-catching music. It has certainly got potential of becoming a stunning and lively performance with its simple and eternal theme. Furthermore, it does not need expensive sets and costumes, because the focus is on the music and the actors’ individual work. Orchestration: Piano conductor, Drums, Bass, Guitar (Flute)
