The famous Ziegfield-star, Fanny Brice is in her dressing room awaiting her husband, the swindler Nick Arnstein, who is returning from prison. While waiting she is looking back on her past as the theatre-frantic teenager, who achieved such great success on stage that she was offered a job by the prominent Broadway producer, Florenz Ziegfeld, purely because of her willpower and unbeatable confidence. She then met Nick for whom she left Follies to become his wife. But alas, he then embarked on a dodgy deal in securities, hence his arrest.
When he finally arrives at her dressing room, it is evident that despite their love for each other, staying together will only cause them pain. Therefore they decide upon a divorce and so Fanny resumes her career as a Broadway celebrity.
