This is a poetic love drama which is based on a story from the 18th century. It takes place in the empire of Japan and revolves around two samurais from Lord Shigemori’s court, who have both fallen in love with two of the empress’s ladies-in-waiting. So very dramatically, we experience all their ups and downs in a world of great class distinctions. The play is written in blank verse and so the audience is charmed by the author’s unique universe that undoubtedly appeals to one’s romantic emotions.
