The last part of Jelinek’s alpine trilogy focuses on the human mania towards technological progress, symbolised in the story about the KZ-prisoners the Nazis used to build Austria’s biggest power station deep in the mountains of Kaprun – the same area where IN DEN ALPEN takes place. Through Jelinek’s great masses of words, fierce irony to Austrian culture can be traced. The play was performed at Burgtheater, Vienna 2003, and Jelinek won the Mühlheimer Play Award for the work.
