Fascinated by Sophocles’ tragedy “The Trachiniae”, the famous Swiss director Luc Bondy encouraged the British dramatist Martin Crimp to transpose the antique piece into a modern story about marriage, violence and war in a world of political hypocrisy and emotional terrorism. This has resulted in a modern tragedy about love and politics. We are located somewhere in Europe. Amelia awaits her husband who is a general and an expert in the fight against terror. He is under suspicion for committing crimes against humanity even though the government has sent him away on a new mission, as he is needed in Gisenyi, Rwanda. Amelia has been located in a secret place and does not know whether or not her husband, the general, is alive. A minister comes to see her, bringing with him a very young woman and a small boy which the general, whose homecoming is expected shortly, has saved during the Gisenyi action. Amelia opens her home to the orphans, but she will be surprised to discover that what she has been told does not exactly agree with the truth.
