Ionesco calls this play, which is in fact his first play, an anti-play. It is “anti” against the naturalistic living-room play in which the words stand for their face value. The environment and the characters are clearly defined. Every story fraction is combined with another in a logical course of events. As far as it goes this play is a living-room play; it takes place in a sitting room. This is a satire, illustrating how we mistreat the opportunities of conversation by using one cliché after another. The story line is stripped of logic and sense. What is unique about it is that it still manages to be a rhythmical unity of words, movement, sound, lights and setting.
