This play by the Irish playwright Marina Carr, is both a comic tragedy about life and a tragic comedy about death. The main character is Hester Swane, who is 40 years old and has got gypsy blood in her. As a child she grew up with her mother in a camper by the Kattemosen; however, one day the child was left in a swan’s nest where a black swan supervised her. Her mother then disappeared. So for years thereafter, Hester was hoping in vain that she would return one day but alas! Meanwhile, however she has lived with her lover, Carthage Kilbride, ten years her junior with whom she has got a seven years old daughter. Eventually, he leaves her as well, in favour of the 20 years old daughter of the local landowner. They are to marry and the celebrations are to take place in Hester’s house and so she is asked to leave her own home. During the amusing and yet grotesque festivities, Hester completes this mysterious Medea inspired play about destiny. It is a highly original and strong drama, offering a line of fantastic characters.
