The year is 1936. In Soviet, Stalin is doing his Moscow trials which are to crush any opposition in the state apparatus. Simultaneously, the revolutionary hero Kotov, his young wife Maroussia and their 6-year-old daughter Nadia enjoy a summer’s day with the family in the country. A stranger makes his entrance, and as he removes his disguise, he is revealed to be Maroussia’s childhood friend and first love Dimitri. At first, the reunion is sweet and joyful, but gradually it seems that Dimitri has more in mind than just a friendly visit. He has arrived to perform a bloody political deed. The play which is based on Nikita Mikhalkov’s Oscar-winning film from 1994, premiered at The National Theatre in London:
