2007 is the year of Astrid Lindgren. A century has passed since her birth and soon stages will be overflowing with tributes to the great Swedish author. The Göteborgsoperan is early with their version of THE BROTHERS LIONHEART – nearly a Swedish “Lord of the Rings” about two brothers’ experiences in the afterlife: a perfect story to base an opera on – about love, courage and responsibility. After their short lives on earth, the brothers Karl and Jonatan are reborn in the land of Nangijala, where fairytales roam. The idyllic life is however disturbed by the evil knight Tengil who has seized power over the Cherry Valley with the help from his fire-breathing dragon Katla. Because of their courage, Karl and Jonathan are also called the brothers Lionheart. They go against Tengil and his black-wearing soldiers. The musical addresses audiences from age 7, and with the epic music of Bo Wastesson and the vital text material by Staffan Götestams and Ture Rangströms, it is undeniably an obvious choice if you are looking for a perfect musical for the whole family.
