THE BROTHERS LIONHEART
Music by Joachim Holbek
Libretto by Peter Asmussen based on Astrid Lindgren’s novel
Opera
This is an opera version of one of the greatest classics of children’s literature: The poetic and profound story of the brothers Tvebak and Jonathan Lionheart. Tvebak is ten years of age, ill and is soon going to die. His elder brother, Jonathan tells him a story of the distant country Nangijala, a paradise behind the stars where adventure lives – and to which you go when you die. In Nangijala Tvebak is healthy and is able to assist his courageous brother in freeing the Cherry Valley and the Wild Rose Valley from the evil Tengil and his fearsome dragon Katla. The two brothers go on a long journey, in which they reveal traitors, liberate rebel leaders and come face to face with a fire-breathing dragon. However, they also meat courageous and loving people who are prepared to sacrifice all for freedom. The Brothers Lionheart is a story of courage, friendship and love. But first and foremost it is an exciting adventure dealing with some of the things in life which are the hardest to understand and explain. The music is composed by Joachim Holbek (Dogville, the Kingdom, Nightwatch), Joachim Holbek composes music in the border between rhythmic and classical music. In his libretto Peter Asmussen adheres closely to the original and uses colloquial and understandable language.
