In this full-length play, we follow the rather neurotic Stanley, who is the only guest at a decaying beach boarding house, run by the naïve Meg and her wimpy husband Petey. Then one day two dubious strangers, Goldberg and McCann arrive searching for Stanley. Meg informs them that it is his birthday and so Goldberg insists that the occasion is celebrated properly. Henceforth, Stanley is subjected to mental torture and eventually he is led away for ‘treatment’.
This play has been subject to several, very different interpretations.
