Susan is a vicar’s wife of unspecified age, but probably in her early 40’s. She is married to a trendy, “up-and-coming” cleric by the name of Geoffrey. Their marriage is mediocre as is her life and she turns to the bottle for comfort. On her late-night meanderings into Leeds to find an off-licence, she meets the delectable Mr. Ramesh who sells her alcohol at his general store, eventually taking her out the back for some Hindi style passion in a bed amongst the lentils. Through Ramesh’s concern for her drinking, she joins AA and sobers up, only to continue her deadening existence, as her reformation becomes another rung on Geoffrey’s ladder up the Anglican hierarchy.
