Askeladden is the most known character in Norwegian fairytales, and is featured in many tales. He is the son of poor smallholders, has two arrogant older brothers and is always set to manage the fire and dig in the ashes, thus the name Askeladden. (Aske = Ashes) However, he is blessed with a tremendous amount of self-confidence, and is constantly seeking new challenges, for example to manage the tasks given to him by the king, rewarded by the princess and half of the kingdom. The two older brothers do not succeed when attempting to stand up to the task. In the meantime, Askeladden comes across an old man with the supernatural powers needed to handle the task. However, the king refuses to present Askeladden with the princess, and sets him even more tasks, all succeeded with the help of the friends. An entertaining family fairytale, performed with great success at Oslo Nye Teater 1996.
