A powerful and probing work exploring the dilemma of the creative artist in a totalitarian state. The play is set in a former Archbishop's palace in an Eastern European capital within a room which has probably been bugged by the secret police. It examines the relationship between four writers, friends of long-standing, and the manner in which their lives and work have been affected by their defiance or acceptance of state doctrines. The complexity of the relationship between the four and the constant uncertainty as to whether they are being overheard makes for a deeply intriguing play.
