It is the wedding night at King Shahrayars palace. Though unlike other newly wedded brides, the new queen Sheherazade is to be killed at dawn just like her many predecessors at the palace. However, Sheherazade is an compelling storyteller, which may just be enough to save her. Because for one thousand and one nights, she manages to spellbind the king with her fantastic stories that she cunningly ends at the peak of excitement, just as dawn breaks. So through her, we are reminded of the many oriental tales about, among others, Ali Baba, Sinbad the Sailor and Princess Parizade, who all come alive in this fantastic stage adaptation by Dominic Cooke. It achieved great success at the Young Vic in London and later in New York as well.
