The action in this musical takes place on board the luxurious cruise ship “S.S. American” en route to England from New York. On the ship we find the young and beautiful American heiress Hope Harcourt, her dressy fiancé Sir Evelyn Oakland and her Mother. Furthermore there is the Bishop Dobson who accompanies two Chinese converts, the conceited Wall Street trader Elisha J. Whitney, the revivalist Reno Sweeney with his horde of beautiful “angels” and lastly Billy Crocker who works as Mr Whitney’s footman. The latter, however, is not on the passenger list but has decided to travel along as a stowaway and during the journey he thwarts Sir Evelyn’s engagement plans to Miss Hope Harcourt as Billy is in love with her as well. It is a highly entertaining story carried forward beautifully by Cole Porters wonderful music.
