In the years of 1987-1989, leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the woman Renate lives a quiet and harmonious life with music and love, man and child in the DDR. A life under DDR conditions, of course, with spies, informers and lurking anxiety, but also with an economic security. However, Renate has another life. A secret life. She writes letters to her lover, Tom, who she has only met once. In her letters to Tom, Renate releases her passion and is split between the longing for love and the responsibility she feels for her family. People yearn for love, regardless of whether walls stands or falls. With DDR, Peter Asmussen has written a masterful melancholy monologue, a moving and bittersweet personification of the DDR era’s division.
