Klaus and his sister Kläre are neglected by their parents, who most of all are preoccupied with themselves and their quarrels. Good things between the parents and the children are no longer existing. Suddenly, a new world opens up from inside of the family closet, where a comedian directs and switches the roles: Now the adults have to go to school while the children go to work. This leads to odd distortions and important discoveries for everyone, because being a child is not just a funny game and the lives of adults can be complicated. When the family members are finally released from the closet, everyone has learned something – even if it was all maybe just a dream… This story marks the beginning of Kästner’s literary career.
